Lighten Up with Derick!
Fitness for Seniors
Feel better, live longer. Keep independent. Most clients in their 40’s and 50’s want to know how to lose weight, however, people in their 60’s, 70’s want to get healthy and 80’s and 90’s ask me “how do I stay independent?” We can help you define your personal fitness goals and help you reach them no matter what your age.
One of our 97 year-old clients regained her independence. To read her story click here.
Although most things are similar when it comes to getting a body stronger, there are several differences when it comes to working with mature clients. The first difference starts with time, the second with intensity. A 30 min. session is usually more than enough time for someone over 65 who is just starting out. Second, we perform more repetitions which gives the muscles more time to warm up which prevents injury.
Every session includes balance training. This is the edge that will keep seniors mobile and independent. Ask about how this can make the difference for you.
Most seniors can afford some kind of training. Body Mastery offers 30-minute sessions for $30. We have several clients who come only once a week. We then personally tailor a do-it-yourself in-home routine to keep them productive between visits. When a person learns how to exercise at home it saves time, gas and money. Clients who work out once a week in our studio do two sessions on their own at home. There is no need to buy expensive equipment. Simple hand weights are all that is recommended. As a senior client gets more fit, the routine is modified to challenge the muscles and continue progress.
Some of our clients prefer a trainer to come to them. In-home training is a bit more expensive, but it is the preferred choice of our clients who are over 90 years old. Training is customized to improve health and to help clients take on the day-to-day challenges of independent living.
Another thing that’s a little different is nutrition. Even though it’s not always a priority to lose weight, most people want to lose fat. We all want a higher percentage of muscle, but seniors need a higher percentage of fat in their diet to stay healthy. Going too low in fat is a frequent mistake and effect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
The good news is that mature adults can make fast improvements in their health and the way they feel. Several studies through the years have shown how dramatic results can be achieved in only eight weeks of strength straining. The key is working smarter not harder.
