How to walk your way to fitness
To lose weight and get fit, walking is one of the safest ways to start. Everything depends on the shape you’re in when you start. See a doctor if you have any concerns about your health. When you get the OK, start with 10-20 minutes three times per week.
You want to walk quickly enough to feel a sense of urgency but not so fast that you feel out of breath. A good barometer is the talk test. Make sure you can talk without stopping in the middle of a sentence.
You don’t need to do it all at once. Break it up if it fits better into your schedule. Use a playlist on an mp3 player with fast music to help set your pace. This is more effective than the radio because it keeps you moving.
Remember that everything adds up. Start taking the stairs. Park in the far end of the parking lot. That brisk walk will burn extra calories.
When you finish your walk, you may want to spend a few minutes stretching. This will help you recover faster and keep you from injury. Gently stretch your calves and your hamstrings. This is also a great time to add a few push-ups or other strength exercises. You don’t need any equipment just a little know-how and five minutes.
After just one week you will notice a new spring in your step. Take the first step to feel better now.
